Kenya Faces Fivefold Surge in Cyberattacks as AI-Driven Threats Escalate
Kenya has seen a dramatic surge in cyberattacks, with a fivefold increase driven by the rise of AI-powered threats. According to the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), the number of cyber threats detected in the country jumped from 187 million to 971 million in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
AI-driven cyberattacks are becoming more sophisticated, targeting government agencies, private institutions, internet service providers, and academia. These attacks leverage machine learning, automation, and advanced techniques such as deep fakes, which use AI-generated content to deceive users, and phishing scams that bypass traditional security measures. The rise of AI in cyberattacks has made it easier for cybercriminals to carry out attacks at scale and with greater efficiency.
Another factor contributing to the increase in cyberattacks is the vulnerability of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which often lack robust security measures. As more businesses and individuals adopt IoT technologies, these connected devices are becoming prime targets for hackers.
The CA has emphasized the need for stronger cybersecurity measures to combat the growing threat of AI-powered attacks. This includes educating the public and institutions on the risks and importance of cybersecurity, as well as encouraging the adoption of advanced security solutions to protect against these increasingly sophisticated threats.
Kenya’s rising reliance on digital infrastructure and services has also made the country more susceptible to these attacks. With more sectors embracing digital transformation, the vulnerabilities in systems and networks are widening, creating more opportunities for cybercriminals to exploit. The CA has urged stakeholders to stay vigilant and invest in cybersecurity as the risks continue to evolve rapidly in the digital age.
